Choose the Right Waxing Experience

Bathing suit season is upon us! One of the many services we provide here at Rejuvenate Rx is waxing. Our seasoned experts have fine-tuned what it is to have an exceptional waxing experience.
Before you step foot in a treatment room there are a couple things you can do to take control over your best results:

1. Exfoliate your desired area beforehand using light, upward motions to release trapped hairs that can be forced back into the skin.
2. Stop shaving! ¼ inch hair length is ideal.
3. Discontinue Retinol products for 3 days prior to your appointment.

A post treatment kit is ideal to send home with to help you avoid the inflammation of ingrown hairs. At Rejuvenate –Rx we offer products as homecare during your 3-4 weeks of grow out (1/4 inch is ideal) until ready for the next session.
Rejuvenate Rx Post Care Recommendations:
Clarisonic Smart Profile- Head to toe exfoliation using Ultrasonic technology
Skinceuticals Blemish and Age Serum- antibacterial with anti-inflammatory properties
Skinceuticals Retinol.5- helps to prevent ingrown hair and breakouts

After a few regular waxing cycles your hair will get on same grow-out cycle. The more you do this service, the more you become desensitized. Your hair will grow back more sparse.
Our estheticians at Rejuvenate Rx are here Monday – Saturday to help you with all your waxing needs. Feel free to call us with any question or concerns. Let us show you what exceptional care is all about.

Dermaplaning at Rejuvenate Rx

Our clients absolutely love dermaplaning!

Dermaplaning is a great way to exfoliate down to newer skin using a fine blade to remove old skin cells.   Although it is a very effective treatment, few people are aware of this technique and fewer practitioners perform it.   Dermaplaning requires medical equipment and specialized training to perform properly.

Despite the skill set needed to perform it, dermaplaning is a very simple, safe and effective treatment.  Nowadays, many medical estheticians and physicians choose dermaplaning as their method of choice for clinical exfoliation.   This technique also allows  superior product penetration when coupled with other medical-grade exfoliation procedures.  As an added bonus say “Good-bye” to facial fuzz and “Hello” to gorgeous makeup.

Want to improve texture, tone, pigmentation, hydration and fine lines all in one treatment?  Dermaplaning is outstanding by itself however at Rejuvenate Rx we use it principally as the first step in our rejuvenating treatment known as the SkinCeuticals MicroPeel.    Come in to try this premier anti-aging corrective skin care treatment (affectionately known as “the peel without any peeling.”) There is no downtime; your skin will not be red or irritated and the results are spectacular.

Consultations are complimentary.  Come in and see us or call (509)290-6149 to find out more.

Bikini Waxing

So Many Hairs, So Many Technicians! How to Choose the Right Bikini-Waxing Experience
One of the many services we provide here at Rejuvenate Rx is waxing. Our seasoned experts have fine-tuned what is needed to have an exceptional waxing experience. We know that there are many other local businesses offering this delicate service so we thought to help you distinguish the best standards as you seek out where and if you should wax– especially now that bathing suit season is upon us.
Before you set foot in a treatment room there are a couple things you can do to ensure your best results:
1. Exfoliate the bikini area beforehand using light, upward motions to release trapped hairs that can be forced back into the skin.
2. Stop shaving– ¼ inch hair length is ideal.
3. Discontinue Retinol products for 3 days prior to your appointment and inform your provider that you are using Retinol.

Once you are in the treatment receiving your waxing service, please make sure your choice is a safe one by paying attention to how your technician is performing the task:
• Sanitation is first and foremost. Bacteria can be transferred through waxing which can cause serious infections such as Staph or even MRSA.
• Gloves are a must when waxing the pubic region.
• Once the wax has been applied to the skin, the same stick should never be re-dipped into the wax.

Pain management is a concern that should be managed including quick wax removal followed by pressing on the area as soon as the wax has been lifted. The technician should use a product to soothe the skin and protect it after the treatment.

A post-treatment product regimen is ideal to use at home to help you avoid the inflammation of ingrown hairs. At Rejuvenate Rx, we offer the products below as homecare during your 3-4 weeks of grow out (1/4 inch is ideal) until you are ready for the next session.
Rejuvenate Rx Post- Care Recommendations for bikini waxing:
Clarisonic Pro Body –Head to toe ultrasonic exfoliation.
Skinceuticals Blemish and Age Serum- -antibacterial with anti-inflammatory properties
Skinceuticals Retinol 0.5

After a few regular waxing cycles your hair will get on a stable grow-out cycle. The more you do this service, the less discomfort you will experience at each treatment. As an added bonus, your hair will grow back sparser with continued waxing.
Our estheticians at Rejuvenate Rx are here Monday – Saturday to help you with all your waxing needs. Feel free to call us with any question or concerns. Let us show you what exceptional care is all about.

Loving care for your lash extensions

Full, lush eyelashes can be yours in one appointment at Rejuvenate Rx.  Eyelash extensions are individual lashes attached to your own lashes using a special bonding agent.  Once affixed, your extensions will grow along with your natural lash growth cycle.  We put together some tips to make your lash extensions a success.

When setting your appointment: Expect to spend a little over 2 hours for a full set of lashes.  Fill appointments are typically 1 hour in length.

Before your appointment:  Remove your makeup if possible.  If not, we will remove your makeup for you at the time of your appointment.   The lash adhesive works better on lashes that are completely free of any residues or oils.

After your appointment:

1)      After each application, whether a full set or a “fill,” avoid getting your lashes wet for 48 hours.

2)      Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming pools and hot tubs for 48 hours.

3)      Avoid “drenching” work outs for 48 hours.

4)      Use eye make-up and removers that are oil-free

5)      Avoid waterproof make-up, especially waterproof mascara.

6)      Wearing less make-up is better for your lash extensions.

7)      Resist urges to pull or tug on your lashes.  If your lashes are crisscrossing, use a lash wand to brush them straight from root to tip. We will provide you with a wand at your appointment.

8)      Keep your extensions beautiful and well-maintained by keeping your lash-fill appointments every 2-3 weeks.

Enjoy your beautiful lashes!  Give us a call at (509)290-6149 if you would like more information.

Cute cheeks with VolumaTM at Rejuvenate Rx

Cute cheeks with VolumaTM at Rejuvenate Rx

Wrinkles and age spots aren’t the only problems as we age. There is another large part of the aging equation: Volume loss.  Volume loss in the cheeks causes our faces to flatten which causes the skin on our faces to migrate lower and look saggy.

Before Juvederm Voluma XC and 1 month post-treatment. A total of 3.5 ml was injected into the cheek area.

Enter VolumaTM from Allergan.  VolumaTM is the first and only FDA approved filler to add volume to the cheek area, mainly on the cheek bone.  VolumaTM gives you back lifted, youthful, cute cheeks for up to 2 years.   There is very little, if any recovery time and your results are instant.

We are happy to share with you more information over the phone or in complimentary office consultation.  Give us a call at (509)290-6149.

Ah autumn! (And Acne?)

Crisp air, warm fireplaces, beautiful foliage, acne breakouts……Yes, fall is the season of acne flares.  The cooler, drier weather pulls moisture from the surface of the skin.  Oils become a little more viscous and sluggish when moving up through the pores.  The result is more dead skin cells on the surface and more plugged pores below; not a good combination for those of us who are prone to acne.

I would like to share some tips for curbing the willingness of our skin to misbehave in the cooler weather.

#1—Don’t over-dry your skin.  I know the tendency is to use harsher, drying acne formulations when our skin is breaking out.  But don’t!  This only increases the amount of dry skin cells on the surface.  Your skin senses dehydration and produces even more oil which promotes bacterial activity.  Use low foaming or even lotion cleansers.

#2–Exfoliate but don’t traumatize your skin.  Use smooth, round exfoliating beads rather than sharp, ground seed pods (like apricot shells.)  Use salicylic-acid products to promote gentle cell by cell exfoliation without over-drying your skin.  Now would also be the time to get a professional facial that includes a mild chemical peel.

#3—Moisturize your skin.   Use a light moisturizing lotion for daytime and a heavier, more emollient moisturizer at night.  Apply the moisturizer after cleaning your face while the skin is still damp to seal in precious moisture.  I prefer to skip the moisturizers that have alpha-hydroxy acids in them; instead I prefer to use cleansers that have salicylic or alpha-hydroxy acids (that are then rinsed off.)

#4—Spot treat with formulations that contain salicylic acid rather than benzoyl peroxide.  Salicylic acid penetrates the spot without over-drying your skin the way BP can.

If you are still struggling with unresolved complexion issues please give us a call (509)290-6149 for other treatments, including prescription solutions.  Consultations are always complimentary.  At Rejuvenate Rx we love working with you to clear up acne and promote beautiful healthy skin.

Enjoy every season!

Chemical Peels, the Unsung Heroes in Skin Rejuvenation

They may have fallen off the radar screens among those sexy sounding laser procedures for skin anti-aging techniques;   but the simple truth behind the power of chemical peels is “They work.”

Chemical Peels have been clinically shown to build collagen and elastin in the dermis of the skin.  The dermis is the layer of skin that “plumps from within.”  Chemical Peels also cause rapid exfoliation of millions of layers of dead skin cells and speed cellular turnover—hence the radiance and glowing complexion.  Over time, chemical peels are your best ally against hyperpigmentation and blotchiness, especially when specifically formulated with anti-pigmentation ingredients.   Acne is another condition that benefits greatly from clinical chemical peels.

An even nicer truth about certain chemical peels such as SkinCeuticals MicroPeels TM is that they leave your skin smooth, hydrated and glowing.  There is no down time.  There is no redness or flaking.

Last, but not least:  The cost of a series of MicroPeels is much less than a single laser treatment and certainly less than a series of laser treatments.

Exfoliation Exposed

We are always eager to increase the turnover and sloughing of dull skin cells that are sitting on our skin’s surface.  There are right ways and wrong ways to attempt to do this.

Mechanical exfoliants such as scrubs and exfoliating “gadgets” can provide exfoliation, however if the superficial skin cells are too adherent to the surface, you will end up disrupting the skin’s barrier, leading to moisture loss and further exacerbation of your rough or dry skin condition. Worse, if you use scrubs made of shells, seeds or other “non-smooth” substances you add scratches and abrasions to the mix of already unhappy skin.

Your best bet is to seek consultation with a skin care specialist who can evaluate your skin type and condition to develop a program of clinical and home-based skin care solutions.  Give us a call if you would like to know more.

Virgin coconut oil bests mineral oil for dermatitis, xerosis

Here is a great article on virgin coconut oil as therapy for both eczema and xerosis (very dry skin) – Dr. Gwyn

By: SHARON WORCESTER, Skin & Allergy News Digital Network

MIAMI BEACH – Virgin coconut oil is superior to mineral oil for lessening both the signs and symptoms of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in children and senile xerosis in elderly adults, according to findings from separate randomized controlled studies.

In the pediatric atopic dermatitis study, 117 children were randomized to receive 8 weeks of twice-daily topical application of either virgin coconut oil (VCO) or mineral oil. Of those treated with VCO, 93% experienced improvement on the Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index, compared with 53% of those treated with mineral oil. An excellent response, defined as 75% or greater improvement on SCORAD, occurred in 46% and 19% of the patients in the VCO and mineral oil groups, respectively, Dr. Mara Therese P. Evangelista reported at the annual meeting of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

The children treated with topical VCO were 85% more likely to experience treatment success than those treated with mineral oil, said Dr. Evangelista, a resident at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center, Manila, Philippines.

Like mineral oil, VCO has both occlusive and emollient properties. But unlike mineral oil, it is believed to have both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, Dr. Evangelista said.

In this double-blind study, the VCO was significantly more effective than mineral oil on all subjective and objective measures, including SCORAD, transepidermal water loss, and skin capacitance, she noted.

Treatment was safe and well tolerated; no differences were noted between the groups with respect to adverse effects.

VCO, which is readily available in health food stores and in many Asian food markets, represents an effective and inexpensive alternative to other commercially available moisturizers for the treatment of atopic dermatitis in children, Dr. Evangelista concluded.

Similarly, in the senile xerosis study, 148 patients with mild to moderate leg xerosis were randomized to receive 2 weeks of twice-daily application of either VCO or mineral oil. The therapeutic response rate was 32.1% in those treated with VCO, compared with 8.9% for those treated with mineral oil, Dr. Mariecon Escuadro reported in a poster at the meeting.

VCO treatment was associated with significant improvement on most subjective and objective measures used in this assessor-blinded study, including the Overall Disability Sum Score (ODSS), patient-assessed efficacy, corneometer reading, and sebumeter reading (relative risk reductions of 60.5%, 27.6%, 51.75%, and 55.5%, respectively), said Dr. Escuadro of the University of the Philippines, Manila.

Scores on the Filipino Dermatology Life Quality Index did not differ significantly between the two groups, nor did adverse events.

VCO in this study was associated with effective and immediate improvement in senile xerosis of the legs in elderly patients, Dr. Escuadro said.

The ACDS Annual Meeting Review Committee reported resolving any real or apparent conflicts of interest prior to presentations being made at the annual meeting.
