Cute cheeks with VolumaTM at Rejuvenate Rx

Cute cheeks with VolumaTM at Rejuvenate Rx

Wrinkles and age spots aren’t the only problems as we age. There is another large part of the aging equation: Volume loss.  Volume loss in the cheeks causes our faces to flatten which causes the skin on our faces to migrate lower and look saggy.

Before Juvederm Voluma XC and 1 month post-treatment. A total of 3.5 ml was injected into the cheek area.

Enter VolumaTM from Allergan.  VolumaTM is the first and only FDA approved filler to add volume to the cheek area, mainly on the cheek bone.  VolumaTM gives you back lifted, youthful, cute cheeks for up to 2 years.   There is very little, if any recovery time and your results are instant.

We are happy to share with you more information over the phone or in complimentary office consultation.  Give us a call at (509)290-6149.

Are you angry?

Glabellar lines (also called frown lines) are vertical lines that appear between the eyebrows as we get older.  Over time, repeated muscle contraction combined with less skin elasticity results in those lines becoming visible even when we are not frowning.   As we age, muscles may also develop some residual tonicity (incomplete muscle relaxation) that makes the creases visible even when we are “relaxed.”

What to do about it?

Refraining from knitting your eyebrows is one technique for avoiding glabellar creases.  This may work for those of us who are able to employ this strategy.  I tend to knit my brows at the slightest need for concentration (epic fail on that one although I did try.)

Proper skin care, good hydration, sunglasses and healthy lifestyle choices may help decrease the appearance of the lines once they appear however there is no evidence to suggest that they are treatments for glabellar lines in and of themselves.

A neuromodulator such as Botoxtm is far and away the best treatment for glabellar creases.   These medications block nerve impulses that cause muscle contractions and allow the muscles to relax.  The overlying skin is then able to smooth out; improving or eliminating those glabellar creases.   A typical treatment with Botoxtm  for the glabellar area is 20 units for women and 30 units for men; but remember that the amount of Botoxtm  needed to achieve the desired result varies from person to person.

You should also know that Botoxtm  takes 3 days to take effect and 14 days before the full effect is reached;  therefore, you should always return to your injector after two weeks to determine if your results are optimal or if a little more medication is needed.   Once you are optimally treated, the effects of Botoxtm will generally last from 3-5 months, depending on how actively you contract your muscles and other factors such as exercise and metabolism.  You can plan for treatment 3-4 times a year as a guide.

“I have never met anyone who’s had Botoxtm  done well who didn’t want to do it again.”

Ah autumn! (And Acne?)

Crisp air, warm fireplaces, beautiful foliage, acne breakouts……Yes, fall is the season of acne flares.  The cooler, drier weather pulls moisture from the surface of the skin.  Oils become a little more viscous and sluggish when moving up through the pores.  The result is more dead skin cells on the surface and more plugged pores below; not a good combination for those of us who are prone to acne.

I would like to share some tips for curbing the willingness of our skin to misbehave in the cooler weather.

#1—Don’t over-dry your skin.  I know the tendency is to use harsher, drying acne formulations when our skin is breaking out.  But don’t!  This only increases the amount of dry skin cells on the surface.  Your skin senses dehydration and produces even more oil which promotes bacterial activity.  Use low foaming or even lotion cleansers.

#2–Exfoliate but don’t traumatize your skin.  Use smooth, round exfoliating beads rather than sharp, ground seed pods (like apricot shells.)  Use salicylic-acid products to promote gentle cell by cell exfoliation without over-drying your skin.  Now would also be the time to get a professional facial that includes a mild chemical peel.

#3—Moisturize your skin.   Use a light moisturizing lotion for daytime and a heavier, more emollient moisturizer at night.  Apply the moisturizer after cleaning your face while the skin is still damp to seal in precious moisture.  I prefer to skip the moisturizers that have alpha-hydroxy acids in them; instead I prefer to use cleansers that have salicylic or alpha-hydroxy acids (that are then rinsed off.)

#4—Spot treat with formulations that contain salicylic acid rather than benzoyl peroxide.  Salicylic acid penetrates the spot without over-drying your skin the way BP can.

If you are still struggling with unresolved complexion issues please give us a call (509)290-6149 for other treatments, including prescription solutions.  Consultations are always complimentary.  At Rejuvenate Rx we love working with you to clear up acne and promote beautiful healthy skin.

Enjoy every season!

New at Rejuvenate Rx –Sclerotherapy!

We are very excited to offer sclerotherapy services at Rejuvenate Rx.   Sclerotherapy is an injection therapy that works to eliminate unsightly spider veins on your legs or just about anywhere else.

Spider veins or telangiectasias are small thin veins that lie close to the surface of the skin; although they are considered mainly a “cosmetic” problem, they can cause sensations of burning or itching at times.

Sclerotherapy is the method for eliminating superficial spider veins by the injection of a “sclerosing” agent directly into the affected blood vessels using a very fine needle.  The result is closure and the eventual disappearance of the spider veins.

Most of the time you will require several sessions to achieve your desirable result; although certain blood vessels will be successfully treated on the first session, there are usually many vessels that need treatment over a few visits.  The number of treatments you need depends on how many areas need treatment and how many blood vessels there are.

To help achieve the best results we will meet with you at least 1 week prior to your first procedure to review medical history, discuss the procedure and review aftercare protocols.

We look forward to seeing you.  Give us a call at (509) 290-6149 if you want to know more about what we can do for you at Rejuvenate Rx!

Break the Acne Cycle

Acne breakouts are caused by blocked pores (follicles.)  We don’t know all the reasons that the follicles become obstructed, but when they do oil that is produced in oil glands cannot exit the pores to moisturize the skin effectively.  Instead, the sebum (oil) along with skin cells along the pore becomes trapped.  The combination forms a sticky plug which effectively traps bacteria in the pore where they multiply and cause inflammation.

One of the most effective treatments for acne, used alone or in combination with other therapies is chemical peels.

At Rejuvenate Rx, we specialize in both chemical peels and other acne treatments.  If you have been frustrated by acne we would love to help you.  Call (509) 290-6149 to learn more.  –Dr. Gwyn

Chemical Peels, the Unsung Heroes in Skin Rejuvenation

They may have fallen off the radar screens among those sexy sounding laser procedures for skin anti-aging techniques;   but the simple truth behind the power of chemical peels is “They work.”

Chemical Peels have been clinically shown to build collagen and elastin in the dermis of the skin.  The dermis is the layer of skin that “plumps from within.”  Chemical Peels also cause rapid exfoliation of millions of layers of dead skin cells and speed cellular turnover—hence the radiance and glowing complexion.  Over time, chemical peels are your best ally against hyperpigmentation and blotchiness, especially when specifically formulated with anti-pigmentation ingredients.   Acne is another condition that benefits greatly from clinical chemical peels.

An even nicer truth about certain chemical peels such as SkinCeuticals MicroPeels TM is that they leave your skin smooth, hydrated and glowing.  There is no down time.  There is no redness or flaking.

Last, but not least:  The cost of a series of MicroPeels is much less than a single laser treatment and certainly less than a series of laser treatments.

Exfoliation Exposed

We are always eager to increase the turnover and sloughing of dull skin cells that are sitting on our skin’s surface.  There are right ways and wrong ways to attempt to do this.

Mechanical exfoliants such as scrubs and exfoliating “gadgets” can provide exfoliation, however if the superficial skin cells are too adherent to the surface, you will end up disrupting the skin’s barrier, leading to moisture loss and further exacerbation of your rough or dry skin condition. Worse, if you use scrubs made of shells, seeds or other “non-smooth” substances you add scratches and abrasions to the mix of already unhappy skin.

Your best bet is to seek consultation with a skin care specialist who can evaluate your skin type and condition to develop a program of clinical and home-based skin care solutions.  Give us a call if you would like to know more.

Nose-waxing Newsflash for Men and Women

As we get older, hair starts to grow in all sorts of places that one could consider unsightly.  Unfortunately, this hair can also be difficult to remove.  Nose hair is a very common area of unwanted extra hair growth.  This can be improved by waxing the hair instead of using alternative methods. Although you have other ways of removing nose hair, waxing truly makes the most sense.

Nose-hair trimmer. This will give you quick results but you will be left with stubble and the hair will begin to grow back almost immediately.

Scissors: With this option you are again left with stubble and the hair grows back quickly as well. Accidental cuts are common.

Hair removal creams: Not recommended for the nose due to a high probability of chemical burns in the nostril and respiratory side effects.

Tweezers: Ouch! This will take a long time if you are removing a large amount of hair. It will also be painful as you are pulling hairs out one at a time or a few at a time at best.

Electrolysis:  This involves a needle that penetrates the skin and is placed next to the hair follicle. It then sends an electric current to destroy the root and the dead hair must then be tweezed. The needle must be inserted into every single hair follicle which is hard to do with a small area such as the nose.  Prepare for hours of pain.

Waxing: This procedure literally takes about a minute per nostril. You get long-lasting results because the hair is removed in its entirety. A new hair must grow back in its place which will take weeks.  Our esthetician has great technique for this procedure—don’t watch internet videos, she uses a very different technique which we would be happy to explain to you on the phone or in person.

Instead of incorporating a hair removal method that requires everyday management, choose waxing and get back living life without worrying about those unattractive nose hairs. Kim Jarrell our licensed esthetician at Rejuvenate Rx is well-known for her gentle touch and expertise in waxing.  Make an appointment for services or complimentary consultation at (509)290-6149.
